Autumn Wreath Ideas

Wreaths are not just for Christmas. As the evenings draw in and the leaves start to turn, an autumn wreath on the front door is a warm welcome for guests and a lovely way to celebrate the change of season. Better still, a wreath made with dried flowers can carry you all the way through to winter. Here are our florists' favourite ideas.

Why an autumn wreath?

An autumn wreath brings colour and texture to your door just as gardens start to fade. It suits every kind of home, from a Victorian terrace in Clapham to a modern flat, and it works indoors too: on a wall, above a fireplace or laid flat on a table with a candle in the middle.

Autumn wreath ideas

  • Harvest tones: rusty oranges, deep reds and golden yellows, with dried seed heads, wheat and grasses for a warm, rustic look.
  • Dried flowers: dried hydrangeas, lavender and statice keep their colour for months, so a dried wreath can stay up from October right through the winter.
  • Berries and foliage: rose hips, hypericum berries and copper beech leaves bring rich colour and texture.
  • Soft and neutral: pampas grass, bunny tails and pale dried flowers in creams and soft browns for a calm, modern look.
  • Woodland: moss, twigs, pine cones and dried leaves for a natural, foraged feel.

Fresh or dried?

Fresh foliage wreaths look full and smell wonderful, but usually last a few weeks. Dried wreaths keep their shape and colour for much longer, which makes them ideal for indoors and for anyone who wants one wreath to last the whole season. Many people choose a mix: a dried base with a few fresh stems that can be swapped as the weeks go on.

Choosing the right size and spot

As a rough guide, a wreath should be around a third to half of the width of your door. Hang dried wreaths somewhere sheltered, such as inside a porch or on an inside door, as heavy rain can spoil dried flowers. Fresh wreaths are happy outside in the cool autumn air.

How to care for your autumn wreath

  • Keep dried wreaths out of direct sunlight, which can fade their colours.
  • Keep them away from damp and steam, so avoid bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Mist fresh wreaths lightly every few days to keep the foliage looking its best.
  • Dust dried wreaths gently with a soft brush, or a hairdryer on a cool setting.

From autumn to Christmas

One of the joys of a dried autumn wreath is how easily it can be updated for the festive season. Add a velvet bow, a few pine cones, cinnamon sticks or dried orange slices in December and it is ready for Christmas. When the time comes, our Christmas collection also includes handmade door wreaths, available to order online from 22 November, and our Christmas wreath workshops are a lovely way to make your own.
